Every year the kids at BCMCS look forward to our Holiday Shop and the opportunity to make special purchases for their friends and family. This most anticipated event of the season never would have happened without the tireless efforts of Kathy Stephenson who lovingly started the shop many years ago. Greeting each class with a big smile under her signature elf hat, Kathy always made the day feel extra fun and special for each child and the shop volunteers alike. Sadly, Kathy passed away this past October. In recognition of her selfless dedication to the children of BCMCS, our school will be renaming our annual event, “Kathy’s Holiday Shop.”
Like last year, this PTA event will be provided by ABC123 Holiday Shop, a local company with family ties to our school. It will take place on November 27th – November 30th. Students will have the chance to purchase inexpensive, high quality gifts. Items available span a variety of goods from pet toys, jewelry, holiday decorations, licensed sports items, small toys, housewares, and the like. Items range in price from $1.00 to $10.00, with the average price coming in between $3.00 and $4.00. If you’d like to check out the items, a parent preview night is offered Monday, November 26th from 6 – 7 pm.
In addition to the traditional choices and keeping in the spirit of Kathy’s generous heart, we are offering a special personalized elf hat – Kathy’s signature look – for sale to each student for $3.00. Your child will return home with a receipt for the purchase; each personalized hat will be delivered within a week or so to your child’s classroom. To honor Kathy’s legacy, the students are welcome to joyously wear these hats for the Holiday Concert later in December. The profits from the elf hat purchases will be donated to the Leukemia Society in Kathy’s name. As a childhood cancer survivor, this was a charity dear to her heart.
If desired, each child will get the chance to shop on a designated day, noted below. You’ll find an envelope attached to help your child budget and plan. Please send your student to school with this envelope on the assigned day he or she will be shopping. Additionally, if you’d like to prewrite gift tags, put them in the envelope. All purchases will be wrapped and labeled before your child brings them home.
There are various ways you can help. We will need tissue paper and ribbon to safely wrap the gifts; a collection box has been placed in the lobby for donations. Additionally, a Sign-Up Genius has been sent out for volunteers. We thank those of you who have already signed up to give your time. And if you haven’t already, don’t worry – the more the merrier! Kathy’s Holiday Shop wouldn’t be possible without the help of our amazing BCMCS family, and we thank you.
