Montessori Education Week

Montessori communities across the world will be celebrating National Montessori Education Week this year beginning February 24th through 28th. In traditional fashion, BCMCS will, once again offer ‘Parent Participations’ during this celebrated time. The following is our procedure for classroom visitation.

Essentially, current parent(s) ONLY is/are invited into the school so as to learn with their child in the Montessori class setting. Unlike a traditional classroom observation where the parent is to remain located in one area and visually monitor class activity, ‘Parent Participations’ allow the parent(s) to work, in tandem, with their child. If your child is using a Montessori manipulative, subsequently, you, the parent(s), will also work with your child on that particular activity. If your child is to receive a lesson from the teacher, then, so will you, the parent(s). You will become your child’s working partner so as to best gain an appreciation of the Montessori education process. Guidelines to best accomplish this unique experience are as follows:

* Half hour intervals are to be kept prompt and punctual

* Remember, as Dr. Montessori stated, 'to follow the child' (i.e., not 'the group' or 'other student(s)')

* Refrain from engaging the teacher in a personal conversation

* Please note, as per BCMCS Policy, that 'visiting parents attending a simple...student observation and/or participation...DO NOT need clearances.' Recognize, however, parent(s) are not to engage with any other student while visiting and must remain in the visual field of a staff member at all times.

* UE NOTE: Be aware of the following reading times as this may not be the optimal time to participate:
                                           4th- 10:30-11:30
                                           5th-  9:30-10:30
                                           6th- 10:30-11:30

Please select only 1 of the available time slots by Thursday, February 20th. We sincerely hope that you will have the opportunity to best understand the Montessori philosophy through this endeavor. If you have any further questions and/or need clarifications, please feel free to contact the administrative staff or your child’s classroom teacher.
